Construction and Demolition

Construction and Demolition Picture

The City of Chino Hills is committed to making a substantial reduction in the volume of waste materials going to landfills by diverting a minimum percentage of debris annually. In compliance with the California Green Building Standards Code (Green Code), the City of Chino Hills adopted Ordinance No. 395 (CHMC Section 13.40) to reduce the amount of waste created by construction projects.

Projects are required to reuse or recycle at a minimum of 65% of project waste.

A Waste and Recycling Reduction Plan (PDF) application is required at the time of submittal for the following types of projects

  • Demolition of a building or structure, or a portion thereof, that is equal to or greater than five hundred (500) square feet (residential, commercial, industrial, or institutional).
  • New construction or renovation of a commercial, industrial, or institutional building or structure that is equal to or greater than one thousand (1,000) square feet and/or building alterations with a permit valuation of $200,000 or above.
  • Construction of any new residential dwelling whatsoever (including all ADUs).
  • Construction of new multi-family dwellings where four or more units are under construction at a given time.
  • City of Chino Hills CIP projects.

Construction and Demolition Debris Recycling

Reusing and recycling construction and demolition (C&D) materials can be more economical than disposal. Common materials include:

  • Lumber
  • Drywall
  • Metals
  • Masonry (brick, concrete, etc.)
  • Carpet
  • Plastic
  • Pipes
  • Cardboard
  • Green waste related to land development

Universal and Hazardous Waste in Construction and Demolition

Universal waste is a common hazardous waste generally not allowed to be disposed of in solid waste landfills. They include:

  • Fluorescent tubes and lamps
  • Mercury-containing items such as thermostats.

Universal and hazardous waste must be taken to a certified Hazardous Waste facility.
